Tales From Janus Valley
The Great Ebon Dragon
Legend has it that the Great Ebon Dragon of the Trackless Fen was a primieval terror in the founding days of Maynard’s Crossing. The beast was said to be unimaginably huge and powerful, with an endless cruel streak. The Crossing was little more than a collection of wooden shacks in those days, and settlers survived mostly from fishing and trapping. Abruptly, the villagers’ lives were shattered when the dragon attacked the town in the night, pillaging what little food stores were there and destroying several homes. The town scrambled to rebuild, but the dragon returned twice more, devouring citizens and threatening to destroy the town for good.
Village founder Maynard Soluce knew that there could be no peace with the dragon. Taking up arms, he tracked the beast to a vile cavern deep in the swamp and slew it, recovering the Stone of Destiny along the way.
From time to time, expeditions will crop up looking to search the swamp for the long-lost lair of the dragon. The story goes that Soluce left the beast to rot in its foul den. Historians and thrill-seekers occasionally brave the perils of the marsh in hopes of finding some evidence that the creature was real. No dragon has ever been seen in Maynard’s Crossing since.
