Tales From Janus Valley
The dwarves of Hammerheim first contacted the overworld nearly two hundred years ago. In the interest of maintaining profitable trade relations, the underground city was expanded upwards. Now Hammerheim is a city built into the side of a stone peak. It serves as a vital link between surface civilization and the dwarven communities beneath the mountains. Hammerheim is thusly full of merchants and miners, who exchange mineral wealth for surface goods with cities like Maynard’s Crossing and Hala Xel.
Life on the surface makes the population of Hammerheim far more open to outsiders than their normally insular bretheren. Visitors from the surface races are warmly welcomed, and can expect to be pestered by well-meaning craftsmen while journeying through the merchant’s quarter. Goods tend to be of fine quality, and bartering for overland fruits and vegetables is a time-honored tradition.
Hammerheim is a hotbed of archaeological activity, as dwarves have a love of both excavation and history. Expeditions to lost dwarven ruins, and occasionally as deep as the Underdark are known to be funded from time to time, and participants occasionally return with considerable wealth.
